2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami

This tsunami happened in 2004. It was caused by a major earthquake in the middle of the Indian ocean. This tsunami like all others behaved like all others in deep water. In deep ocean water they only form small humps. This tsunami was a succesion of a couple waves. It went through the retreat - rise cycle every about 30 minutes. The third wave was the highest of all the waves. When satellites detected the tsunami it was only 2 feet high but a warning was not placed because they didn't have the technology. In this tsunami about 228000 people died.
Some other casualties are somethings such as coral reefs were destroyed by humans making the tsunami more powerful. Also people took out sand dunes and certain trees which could've the dimmed the power of the tsunami.

!:.. RESEARCH QUESTION ..:!

What should people do to be more prepared for tsunamis in Indonesia?

Indonesia is and has been recently preparing for tsunamis because of the devastation caused by the 2004 Tsunami/Earthquake . They have over 200 million dollars to go towards tsunami detection and research. Some tsunami experts tips to surviving tsunamis is to be ready and get to highland as fast as possible. Some tips people could do for getting prepared for Tsunamis is to know how much your home is above sea level. Then you should know how far you are from the coast, if your really in-land you probably have nothing to worry about, you should just maybe have minor precautions. Also people should know of tsunami warning signs, such as rapid decrease or increase in water, sudden water disturbances and earthquakes.
Make sure all family members know how to respond to a tsunami. Make evacuation plans. Pick an inland location that is elevated. After an earthquake or other natural disaster, roads in and out of your city may be blocked, so pick more than one evacuation route. Also teach your kids how to turn off gas, water, and electricity and when to call 911. Some more things to know about tsunamis: Tsunamis can rise up to 30 ft and 100 ft in extreme cases, they move several hundred ft inland, and they move faster then a person can run! Tsunamis can bring lots of debris into city's such as boats and rocks. This can kill or injure people. Tsunamis can also happen at any time, and can even come into cities through rivers and lakes.
If you happen to be in school at the time of a tsunami warning you should listen to recommendations of teachers and school personnel. If you are at home you should make sure your entire family knows of it, then you should evacuate the house calm and safely, and get to your nearest tsunami evacuation center, and listen to law enforcement authorities. If your at beaches or near, and you feel the earth shake, get to higher ground, DON'T wait for a tsunami warning to be announced. Also stay away from rivers and lakes that empty into the ocean.
Some supplies you should have are:
Flashlight and extra batteries. Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries. First aid kit and manual. Emergency food and water Nonelectric can opener Essential medicines. Cash and credit cards. Sturdy shoes also are needed. Things like these can help you survive tsunamis and sometimes other natural disasters. You also should make sure family members should always have a plan to meet somewhere in case you're separated (Kids at school, adults at work). You should also have an out of state relative you should call and know the address of in case of a big disaster. Always be listening to an emergency radio channel, before and after a tsunami strikes. If you hear a tsunami warning, get to higher ground. Also stay away from beaches. Only go home if authorized. Remember the first wave is not always the largest. Stay out of damaged buildings. Enter your home with caution. Shovel mud while moist to help dry walls and also open windows and doors. Also check food supplies and test drinking water. Food that has made contact with ocean water could become contaminated. One more, very important thing is gas leaks. If you smell it, or hear a weird noise turn off the gas and leave your house. Look for damage to any electrical utilities and see if any sewage/water lines are damaged. If so call a plumber. That's the basics of what to do if there is a tsunami.

Tsunami Preparedness OTHER COUNTRIES

Japan: Japan is one of the world's best-prepared nations when it comes to earthquakes and the potentially destructive forces of the sea. Their network of land and ocean sensors, and their quick public alert system are often recognized as the world's most sophisticated. (Courtesy Of CBS News)
